SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY INTERVENTION
Sports Psychology Intervention

Sports psychology interventions involve training of psychological skills for performance improvement. It includes working with athletes, coaches, other managers and family regarding injury, rehabilitation, communication, stress or conflict management, development of the team and self, and career transitions to list a few.  

Depending on the need, the client could be either the individual athlete, the team and/or management (includes coaches). 

Interventions are tailored to specific needs of athlete(s), management (includes coaches) and/or teams. The aim is to enhance performance by the athlete and/or team. Additionally, to assist managers with certain beneficial skills to be able to get the best out of the athlete(s) based on their psychological profile. The family to the athlete are often brought in to enhance beneficial ways to support the athlete and/or at times to join some of the individual sessions with the athlete if there is a family related psychological issue impacting performance. 

The general aims of sports psychology intervention are to achieve the following (not limited to the list):

  • Assist athletes with mental fitness training to enhance performance, and facilitation of self-development aiming to increase understanding and deal with psychological factors that affect performance.  
  • Assist athletes and their teams in dealing with psychological factors that affect performance, and facilitation of team development. 
  • Assist managers (including coaches) in understanding and dealing with psychological factors that affect performance of athletes as individuals and/or within teams, and facilitation of leadership development.
  • Assist managers (including coaches) in own self-development. 
  • Assist family and supporting structures through facilitation of groups and workshops of beneficial ways to support the athlete(s). 
  • As a trained Clinical Psychologist support and counselling/ psychotherapy are offered as and when required for athletes and management (coaches) as life issues or crises are likely to occur that could impact performance. There might be a need to bring in the loved ones who are close to the impacted athletes/management as part of the intervention.
Field Experience

Dr. Tumi Mashego provides services as a Clinical and Sports Psychologist; Performance Mindset & Life Coach to individual elite athletes, teams, sporting management, coaches, the athletes' support structures/families continually for various sporting codes and social athletes. Continually journeys with athletes (competitive and social of all sporting codes), their support systems, teams, technical staff and management. She is a former competitive provincial athlete for netball and track events representing the Limpopo Province; and previously held provincial records for 100m, 200m & 400m; and has attempted most sporting codes socially to understand the game and mindset required to achieve great results. She combines her experience and life lessons learnt as a competitive athlete; clinical and sports psychology knowledge; personality profiling experience; work with the mind spanning over 18 years; passionate personality as a mindset, performance and life coach to tailor make interventions for clients at all levels (social or professional/elite athletes; management; social or professional teams/clubs) bringing in their management and support structures where needed. She includes in her own personal wellness program social netball and running. She is an avid promoter and supporter of youth development and women in sports. She is an advocate for wellness and mental health in athletes, sporting teams, and society in general.

Dr Tumi provides interventions for professional competitive individuals and clubs/teams such as (but not limited to):

  • PSL football (e.g. Mamelodi Sundowns FC) and other elite SA football players on an individual level (one previously based in Spain)
  • Works with elite tennis and wheelchair chair tennis players
  • Professional rugby players (e.g. South African ladies rugby who play for Blue Bulls ladies team daisies at club level)
  • Football developmental clubs for young boys and girls (e.g. Mamelodi Sundowns FC; and Refilwe Ladies FC)
  • Running clubs such as RunningWithSoleAthleticsClub
  • Water Polo SA professional players (one based in the USA)
  • Squash players (provincial level)
  • Athletes and their support systems as a service provider on the North West University High Performance Centre Mental Health Service Network
  • University Sport South Africa (USSA) employees
  • The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation - Gauteng Women in Sports

8. Dr. Tumi was a speaker at The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation annual “Gauteng Women in Sport Dialogue” under the Theme “Carving pathways for the Economic Emancipation for Gauteng Women in Sport” (16/3/2024).
The objectives of the Dialogue included:
• Providing a platform to uplift women and girls excelling in sport by linking them with Captains of Industry.
• Transcending barriers affecting women and girls excelling in sports and applying collective knowledge and insight for their advancement in participation.
• Exploring industry advancements that enhance the economic emancipation of women in sport.

Dr. Tumi was posted on the sports medical services at Loftus Park Instagram page (21/2/23) linked to her own page @drtumi_dsm talking about her sports injury recovery journey which involved a sports medicine specialist doctor to rule out physical ailments and Biokinetics rehabilitation program. In the clip she mentions the importance of understanding the body and her injury caused by several factors (being a former sprinter who runs in a specific manner, with certain weakened muscles, core challenges etc.) which were impacting her transition into long distance running.
